North Carolina swimmers excelled at the Speedo Junior Nationals in Knoxville this past week. Olivia Carter of Enfinity Aquatics (EAC) capped off a week of outstanding performances with a new Junior Nationals Short Course record in the women’s 200 fly with a time of 1:53.94. Carter also won the 400 IM and placed second in the 200 IM. A trio of Marlins of Raleigh (MOR) swimmers each claimed a first-place finish. Madison Homovich won the women’s 1650, Ashley McCauley won the women’s 200 breast, and Zach Brown was the top finisher in the men’s 200 fly. Earlier in the week Homovich earned a second-place finish in the 500 free and a third in the 400 IM.
The SwimMAC women, on the strength of outstanding relay performances along with several individual top ten finishes easily captured the women’s team title. The SwimMAC women were led by Sinclair Larson’s second-place finish in the 200 back and a third in the 100 back and Julia Menkhaus’ second-place in the 200 Fly. William Chan’s second-place in the 100 breast and Jack Walker’s third in the 200 free paced the top finishers for the SwimMAC men, which finished second in team scoring.
Other notable individual performances were a second-place finish in the men’s 1650 and a fourth in the 500 free by Ross Dant (YSST), fourth-place finishes by Maddy Flickinger (MAC) in the women’s 200 back, Tim Connery (MAC) in the men’s 100 breast, Grace Countie (MOR) in the women’s 50 free, and fifth-place finishes by Olwyn Bartis (MAC) in the 500 free, Abby Arens (MOR) in the 100 breast, and fifth-place finishes by Julia Menkhaus (MAC) in the 100 back and 200 back.
