Kathleen Baker set a new world record at the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships in Irvine, California. A former NCS age group swimmer, now representing Team Elite, Baker swam a remarkable 58.00 in winning the women’s 100m backstroke. Earlier she tied for first place in the 200m backstroke. On the final day, Baker broke the US Open record in the 200m IM for her third national championship of the meet. Her world record swim earned Baker the meet’s Phillips 66 Performance Award.
Ashley Twichell of the TAC Titans swam a personal best in winning the women’s 1500m freestyle on the meet’s final day. Already a national champion in the open water 10K, it was Twichell’s first national championship in the pool. Twichell will represent Team USA at the Pan Pacific Championships in both the 10K open water and the 1500m free.
