NCS swimmers among the best in Budapest

Three North Carolina Swimming athletes competed at the World Junior Swimming championships in Budapest, Hungary this past week with all three reaching finals in their events.

Earlier in the week, Charlotte Hook of the TAC Titans finished third in the 200 fly, bringing home a bronze medal. TAC teammate Claire Curzan earned three individual medals; a silver for her second place finish in the 100 back, a bronze in the 50 fly, and another bronze in the 100 fly. Curzan also led off the gold medal winning USA 4×100 medley relay in the meet’s final event. Marlins of Raleigh swimmer Abby Arens made finals in the 200 breast on the last day of the meet. TAC Titans coach Bruce Marchionda was also part of the delegation, as a member of the Team USA coaching staff.

Officials Application: NCAA Championship Meets

Below is the link for the application to serve as an official during the 2020 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.  The deadline is 5 p.m. Eastern time Monday, October 14 for submitting the application and passing the rules test (swimming officials only).  Please share this information with anyone else who may be interested in serving as a swimming or diving official for the 2020 NCAA championships.  Rules questions and/or interpretations should be directed to Greg Lockard, secretary-rules editor at greg@swimdiverules.com.   If you have questions regarding the NCAA official’s application, feel free to contact me at rhale@ncaa.org.  Thank you.

2020 IMX Camp Selection Roster/Application Form

Here are the 2020 IMX Camp Registrations as of 10/07/19…Deadline is 10/15/19

The 2020 NC Swimming IMXtreme Swim Camp will be held in Greensboro on December 28-29, 2019.  In this camp, you will have the opportunity to meet other swimmers from North Carolina, undergo swim and dryland training and have a great time interacting with NCS coaches and swimmers. The camp will offer swimming education, both in and out of the water, and will also cover many different swimming topics.

For this year’s camp, all those selected can be found on the Camp Selection Roster below in the single age group in which swimmers ranked in the top-20.  We have listed 25 athletes in case any of the top-20 are unable to attend.

2020 IMX Camp Selection Roster  

To confirm for the December IMX Camp, each athlete should do the following:

  • Send an email stating the athlete’s name and their intent to attend to NCS Camp Coordinator, Jonathan Watson at 01silversurfer@bellsouth.net immediately and state whether you plan to attend or not. This will help us decide if we have any open spots in the camp. Alternates (#21-25) should also email Jonathan if they would like to attend, so that they can be notified if a spot opens up. The camp has a maximum capacity of 120 athletes (20 per single age group—60 girls and 60 boys).
  • Once parents of each athlete have emailed Jonathan, complete the online application form below that includes:
    • IMX Camp Application
    • PayPal Link
    • Consent and Release Statement
    • NCS Camp Code of Conduct
    • NCS Team Travel Policy

The form must be submitted prior to Thursday, October 10, 2019 or your spot will be forfeited.

  • Please use the PayPal link on the form to pay the camp fee by the Thursday, October 10, 2019 deadline. The cost of the IMX Camp is $170 per athlete.  Please note that camp fee payments are non-refundable. Failure to complete the payment transaction by the deadline will result in the athlete’s spot being offered to the next swimmer on the list.

2020 IMX Camp Application Form  

The IMX Camp Director will be Jay Dodson (starcoachjay@gmail.com) who will direct the 10th Annual IMX Camp.  Coach Dodson will be in charge of the lodging, meals, transportation, camp apparel, coach selection and all other camp logistics.  Jay will select a few adult chaperones to assist him throughout the camp and will send out camp specifics to all participants as they are finalized.  The camp staff will be in charge of creating and administering camp workouts and all additional camp activities. Complete information will be forthcoming via email sometime in October.

2020 IMX Camp: Staff Application Form

We are excited to offer another great NCS Camp experience for 120 of our swimmers ages 11-14 at the annual IMX Camp. The camp will be at the Greensboro Aquatic Center the weekend of December 28-29. This is an overnight camp with an opportunity to work with swimmers both in and away from the pool. We appreciate your interest in wanting to help make our North Carolina Swimming Camps a positive experience for all participants.

At this camp we try to provide a number of experiences for the swimmers both in and out of the water so coaches will meet ahead of time to plan and have designated responsibilities.

2020 Fall HOD bids due 9/8/19

REMINDER:

The 2020 Fall HOD will be held the weekend of Oct 3-4, 2020.

If your club would like to submit a bid for the 2020 Fall HOD, bids must be submitted by 9/8/2019.  All bids will be forwarded for consideration at the upcoming  HOD Meeting in Greensboro on Sept 22.  Remember, bids for the Fall HOD must include access to nearby banquet facilities to accommodate 300 people for the NC Awards Banquet and access to a pool to hold the All Star Clinic.

The HOD Bidding policy can be found in Section 1.6 of the North Carolina Policies & Procedures.

More NCS records fall at Junior Nationals

Several more NCS long course records fell at the Speedo Junior National Championship meet this past week. Tim Connery (MAC) led the way with new records in the 15-16 men’s 100 free and the 15-16 men’s 200 IM. The 200 IM time of 2:01.58 also set a new mark in the 15-18 age group. Grace Rainey (MAC) also set a new record in the women’s 13-14 100 breast while Lindsay Flynn (ATOM) posted a record time in the women’s 15-16 50 free.

In addition to the new individual records, the SwimMAC relay team of Jack Walker, Hugh Svendsen, Tim Connery, and Baylor Nelson broke the men’s 18 and under 800 free relay record.

SwimMAC wins Junior Nationals

SwimMAC Carolina claimed the team title as the Speedo Junior National Championships came to a close Saturday night at the Avery Aquatic Center on the campus of Stanford University.

SwimMAC tallied 554.5 points over the five-day meet to run away with the combined team trophy. Dynamo Swim Club finished second with 461 points, followed by the Mason Manta Rays in third with 217 points. SwimMAC also claimed the men’s title with 334.5 points, while Dynamo and Long Island Aquatic Club tied for the women’s title with 221 points apiece, only one point ahead of SwimMAC’s 220.

NCS Swimmers had several top eight finishes during the week, including first place finishes by Jack Walker (MAC) in both the 200 free and 400 free, and a first place finish by Tim Connery (MAC) in the 200 IM. Other NCS swimmers with top eight finishes included Grace Rainey (MAC), Morgan Razewski (MAC), Katie Rauch (ATOM), Sam Hoover (NCAC), Ellie Marquardt (ATOM), Hugh Svendsen (MAC), Baylor Nelson (MAC) and Lindsay Flynn (ATOM).

SwimMAC also had several top eight relays, including a first place finish by the team of Jack Walker, Tim Connery, Hugh Svendsen, and Baylor Nelson in the 4×200 free relay. The SwimMAC women’s 4×100 free relay also grabbed a second place finish with the ATOM women’s 4×100 free relay close behind them in fourth place.

NCS athletes named to World Junior Championships roster

USA Swimming, the national governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States, announced the names of 45 young swimmers and six assistant coaches to represent Team USA at the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The five-day event will take place from August 20-25 and will feature the world’s best under-18 swimmers competing at the state-of-the-art Danube Arena.

Included on the roster are three NCS athletes, Abby Arens (MOR), Claire Curzan (TAC), and Charlotte Hook (TAC). In addition, Bruce Marchionda of the TAC Titans was named to the Team USA coaching staff. Click here to view the entire roster.

NCS records smashed at recent meets

NCS athletes broke several NCS long course records during recent meets. One record was broken at the Southern Age Group Zone meet in Cary, and a couple records fell at the Futures meet in Greensboro, but most of the records were set at the Phillips 66 National Championships in Stanford, California.

Nicole Zettel (TAC) broke the girls 11-12 200 IM record at zones, while Matthew Lucky (SAIL) lowered his own boys 13-14 200 breast record at the Futures meet. Braeden Haughey (TAC) also established a new record at Futures, in the men’s 15-16 400 free.

Claire Curzan (TAC) shredded the women’s 15-16 record book with new records in the 100 free, the 100 back, the 200 back, and the 100 fly. Her times in the 200 back and 100 fly were also 15-18 records! TAC teammate, Charlotte Hook set a record in the women’s 15-16 200 fly and her time was also a record in the 15-18 age division. Abby Arens (MOR) established new marks in both the women’s 15-18 100 breast and the women’s 15-18 200 breast. Ross Dant (YSST) broke records in the 15-18 men’s 400 free and 15-18 men’s 800 free. Finally, Ashley Twichell (TAC), fresh off her Olympic qualifying swim at the FINA Open Water World Championship, set new records in the women’s open 400 free, 800 free, and 1500 free!
