Top Performances – NCS 14U Age Group Champs
The North Carolina Swimming 14 and Under Age Group Championships featured several outstanding performances, including a National Age Group Record in the 13-14 Girls 100 yard backstroke by MAC’s Kathleen Baker, swimming unattached. Baker, who broke the state record in the preliminaries, shattered her earlier mark but also eclipsed the national standard with a time of 52.87. Baker also broke state records in the 100 free (49.88), the 100 breast (1:02.26), and the 100 fly (53.46).
Kayla Tennant of STAR Aquatics broke an individual state record in the 11-12 Girls 100 fly with a time of 57.42. In addition, Tennant teamed up with Makena Markert, Emily Schoonhagen, and Kat Morrison to set new state records in both the 11-12 Girls 400 free relay (3:41.95) and the Girls 400 medley relay (4:03.24). STAR Aquatics also set new state records in the 11-12 Boys 400 free relay and the Boys 400 medley relay. Levente Bathory, Charles Taylor, Tucker Burhans, and Cameron Davenport swam a 3:39.42 to set the new mark in the free relay. Bathory, Taylor, and Burhans teamed up with Zach Weir to break the state record in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:03.38.
MAC’s 13-14 Girls relay team set a new meet record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.07. Relay team members included Lauren Wallace, Sara Stranick, Alyssa March, and Nora McCullagh.

SwimMAC Wins First-Ever Club Excellence Title
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – SwimMAC Carolina is the decisive team champion in the 2012 Club Excellence rankings. Scoring 59,856 points, Coach David Marsh’s club took top honors for the first time. The Dynamo Swim Club finished in 2nd place with 50,882 points followed by the Mission Viejo Nadadores in 3rd position with 47,588.
The following clubs achieved the coveted Gold Medal level for 2012:

Three clubs have achieved the Gold Medal level for the first time this year: First Colony Swim Team, Y Spartaquatics Swim Club and Crimson Aquatics. Of the 306 teams that submitted applications for this year’s program, a record 88 clubs achieved the criteria for Gold Medal eligibility.
There were several key changes to this year’s program. The most notable being:
- Only 18 & Under athletes are eligible to participate
- The number of Gold Medal teams has increased from 16 to 20 teams
- Scoring was added in the Women’s 1500 Free and the Men’s 800 Free
- Scoring was added for participants in USA Swimming’s Open Water Nationals, and
- The dates for eligible performances are based on the 2010-2011 swim year, not the calendar year as in the past.
Clubs have been selected as Gold, Silver or Bronze Medal clubs according to the following parameters:
Gold Level: The top 20 point-scoring clubs eligible for the Gold level.
Silver Level: The remaining clubs ranked through #100 and not achieving Gold status.
Bronze Level: Clubs ranked #101 through #200 and not achieving Gold or Silver status.

The program recognizes USA Swimming clubs for their commitment to excellence in performance. In addition to recognizing the top club teams, the program provides grant funding for resources that enable clubs to expand and/or enhance the services they already provide to athletes. A total of $330,000 in grant dollars will be distributed to the 100 Gold and Silver-level clubs. Final grant awards will be announced by April 20.

NC Swimmers at Junior Nationals
Junior Nationals Great Meet for NC Swimmers
SwimMAC Carolina led the way for the North Carolina delegation at Junior Nationals which concluded yesterday at the University of Texas pool in Austin. With 20 swimmers competing, MAC showed their strength by placing 3rd in combined men and women’s scores. The women place 4th overall and the men placed 2nd to the Bolles School Sharks. For the men, the 200 Free Relay set new NAG Records in the 17-18 and 15-18 age groups with a 1:21.30. The men’s 400 Free Relay also set a new NAG record in the 15-18 age group with a 2:56.93. Relay swimmers included Peter Brumm, Logan Heck, John Manchester, Ryan Wilkinson and Kyle Darmody. Congratulations to these young men on some outstanding swimming!
Swimmers competing for MAC at the meet included Lauren Rhodes, Linsay Cooper, Nora McCullagh, Maija Roses, Elsa Welshofer, Nicole Emery, Maria Sheridan, Caroline Bryant, Logan Heck, Peter Brumm, Ryan Wilkinson, Kyle Darmody, Sean Corcoran, Lane Bretschneider, William Wheeler, John Manchester, Kevin Glenn, Billy Murch Elliott, Thomas Hetzel, and Currie Murch Elliott. Swimming Unattached-MAC were Alexandra Martelle and Kathleen Baker.
RSA was represented by Henriette Stenkvist, Hannah Moore, Andrew Henry, William Deforest, Victoria Tschoke and Ryan Cade. DUKE was represented by Garrett House. YSST was represented by Sava Turcanu; WOW had Travis Johns and Matthew McPeters; YWNC was represented by William Young and Ryan Deberry. WAVE had Daniel Dozier and Sean Yeh and SSS had Kurt Wohlrab swimming. Swimming Unattached-GSA was Daniel Le and Unattached-NC was Kyle House. Congratulations to all our Junior National swimmers!
2011 Winter Nationals
NORTH CAROLINA WELL-REPRESENTED AT 2011 WINTER NATIONALS
With 10 officials on deck and 46 athletes who competed at the AT & T 2011 Winter Nationals, North Carolina Swimming was well-represented in Atlanta over the weekend. Working a national deck for the first time were Jerry Branner, Jeff Foltz, and Lou Mondelli. They were joined by Dave and Lisa Olack, Suzanne Heath, Joel Black, Chris Kitchens, Jon Fox and Mike Hoffer.
In the competition pool, many North Carolina swimmers achieved their goals in this special long course meet – set up to assist swimmers in qualifying for Olympic Trials to be held later this year.
